Bassano to the Trentino Lakes

The Valsugana line, from Bassano to Levico Terme.

Why this one exists

Ride north up a river valley until the mountains close in and the lakes open up.

For people who want the mountains without having to climb over them.

It starts in Bassano, where we live and where we know everyone worth knowing, so the first half of the week comes with the full menu: artisans, growers, private chefs, the places that take a phone call from us and not from a booking site. Then it goes north, and the way it goes north is the point. Fifty kilometres of cycle path up the valley with mountains standing on either side and a river running alongside, almost none of it shared with a car. You end up at a lake, in the mountains, having barely noticed the climbing.

From there we have put together a route that links five smaller lakes most people have never heard of into one ride that does not break anybody. And one evening, a restaurant run by one man, who cooks and serves a tasting menu himself, with records playing while he does it.

The climbsMonte Grappa. The Valsugana cycle path, 50km traffic free.

Food and wineBici Grill, a food stop along the cycle path. A tasting menu with vinyl records spinning.

CultureValsugana. Lago di Levico and Lago di Caldonazzo. Trentino DOC.

What only we can say

On your last evening we take you to a restaurant run by one man. He cooks, he serves, he puts the records on, and he comes over between courses to tell you what is in the dish and where he got it. There are no choices and no menu. It is the sort of place you would never find on your own, and the sort of evening people still write to us about.

Shape of the week

How eight nights usually run.

This is the rhythm, not a timetable. You pick the riding days from the menu below, and we build the week around which ones you want and what the weather is doing.

  • ArrivalTransfer, bike fit, dinner in Bassano.
  • Day oneAn easier loop out of Bassano, and the first wine tasting.
  • Day twoAsolo or Marostica, your choice, on road or gravel.
  • Day threeA day in and around Bassano: an experience, a walled town, or the plaster cast museum.
  • Day fourUp the valley to Levico, the point to point.
  • Day fiveThe five lakes loop, with a stop for wine and bruschetta.
  • Day sixThe spa, the lake, or Trento. Dinner at the one-man restaurant.
  • DepartureTransfer back to Venice.

The riding days

Pick your days. We have ridden all of them this season.

We publish the days rather than a fixed itinerary, because that is how the trip actually works. Distances are what we ride, not a brochure total. Every week has one easy day in it on purpose.

The Wine Hills of Asolo

East out of Bassano on quiet country roads into the wine hills of Monfumo and Castelcucco. You pass close to the plaster cast museum, which holds the original models for Canova's sculptures and is worth the detour if you have the legs. Then up into Asolo itself, a walled hilltop town, for lunch in the centre before the ride home. Road.

60km 800m

The Castle Walls of Marostica The easy day

West instead, through the vineyards and olive groves on the gravel tracks north of town, then into Marostica, where the castle walls still run up the hillside and the main square is a giant chessboard. On from there into the hills above Breganze, which is bold red wine on volcanic soil, and back to Bassano over the La Rosina climb. Works on gravel or road.

55km 850m

Off-road to Cittadella Gravel only

South out of Bassano and almost entirely off the road: gravel tracks, cycle paths and the lanes that follow the waterways down to Cittadella. The town is a perfect circle inside its medieval walls and you ride the last stretch with them in front of you. Flat, three hundred metres of climbing in seventy two kilometres, so it is the easy day on any week you put it in.

72km 300m

Up the valley to Levico Point to point

The point to point day, and the reason the week exists. Out of Bassano on the road for the first twenty five kilometres, then onto the cycle path at Cornale and off the traffic for the next fifty. The valley narrows, the mountains close in on both sides, and you stop at a bici grill along the way for lunch like everyone else riding it. You finish at Levico Terme, in the mountains, at a different base. If you ride it on gravel, you are off the traffic even earlier.

75km 900m

The five lakes

A loop out of Levico linking five smaller lakes in a single ride, with a stop partway for a glass of wine and bruschetta. Quiet, green, and nothing like the riding you did at the start of the week.

56km 900m

A day off the bike, in the mountains Optional

The base at Levico has a spa, an indoor and an outdoor pool and hot tubs, so the simplest version of this day is not getting on the bike at all. Otherwise it is the lake, the vineyards above it, or the train down to Trento for the afternoon.

–

One last climb, if you want it Optional

An optional mountain climb to finish the week for anyone who feels they have not earned dinner yet.

28km 1,000m

Guided starts at €450 per person per day. It usually runs for a group of six to twelve, which is how the economics work best, and above eight we bring a second guide. Two people can travel guided if that is what you want. The price is simply different, and we will tell you what it is on the call.

We are not a booking engine and we never will be. Every trip is shaped on a conversation first, then priced. A 30 per cent deposit holds your dates and the balance is due 90 days before you arrive.

Peak dates are quoted on enquiry. All prices in euro.

“Panoramic roads, picturesque villages, breathtaking scenery, a few perfectly placed climbs to earn our aperitivo, and historic towns that left us in awe every single day.”

Questions

Before you book a call.

Is the ride to Levico really traffic free?

Almost all of it. The first twenty five kilometres out of Bassano are on the road, and from Cornale you are on the cycle path for the next fifty. Ride it on gravel and you leave the traffic behind sooner still.

What is there to do on a day off the bike?

In Bassano, more than you will fit in. Any of our experiences, the fortified towns nearby, the plaster cast museum, or a day out to Treviso. In Levico, the lake, the vineyards above it, or the train into Trento.

Can we finish at a spa rather than ride?

Yes. Our base in Levico has a spa with indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs, so you can simply stay there. In Bassano a spa visit is easy to arrange. And if spas matter to you, say so on the call, because the Euganean hills are built on hot springs and we would plan the week differently.

Shall we talk it through?

Fifteen minutes with Susi and Benji. We will ask how you ride, how you like to travel, and when you can get here. No pitch.
